What did arabian horses eat out in the desert?

My grandma has been asking me this for years, and i would appreciate if someone could help me answer?

1. Before the desert was a desert it was a large green pasture, so naturally the horses ate grass. After the Bedouins domesticated them they fed them dates and camel's milk.
