- Most Arabians have this trait, my stallion that I show Western Pleasure, he is so good at it, he holds it high and arched neck..he always has. and when I show him halter, I raise my lead and he pitches that arch in his neck and brings the head high. Jet my new Arabian Colt, I have a halter on him already, and he pitches high now, and I have not even started with his training yet, he is a baby, and but is already halter broke and does not balk at it at all. Arabians are natural, and isn't it beautiful. in riding my stallion in Western Pleasure, arched neck, and picture time, halter or bridle, head up high, with very little asking on my part... this is one reason I chose Arabians, the natural ability and ease of showing, they train really well.... Yes Bunny is right, but some horses do not need all the frills to get their attention, or a mare to stand nearby to be able to get the horse to do what a photographer wants them to do. I have seen a lot of Arabians and not all, need all this work to get a perfect shot.......
- Professional photographers have lots of tricks...I worked with one and he had these 'tools'... A recording of a horse whinnying... Pompoms on a stick that another person would wave... For a pumped stallion look, a mare would be brought into the same area, but no where near the stallion, and then his penis would be edited out of the photo... One time, his assistant 'crawled' along the ground like a worm to get a horse's attention... Waving flags... And a few other things like that...that the assistant would wave or do to get the horse looking alert and head held high.
- Black Bunny is totally correct. When pro photogs take pics, they have mirrors, pom poms etc and usually take the posed pics first and then the horse is turned loose for more pictures. You can see where he's been greased up around the eyes and muzzle.
- most of them just do that.but just try getting their attention. whistle or something.
- Part of it is photographers' tricks. Part is the natural head carriage of the Arabian horses. Arabians have a natural high head carriage. They are bred for this carriage - it is part of the breed trait, so if you surprise an Arabian, he will lift his head and arch his neck differently than another breed. It is just part of the breed.
- they are trained to stand, square up and then 'give' at the poll - this excentuates the throatlatch & arch of the neck. it's fairly easy to do. [start with whoa to stand, then move the front feet only to square] once this is accomplished, the 'game' begins. snort & blow at him; take a step towards him - it will get his ears forward & usually the tail to arch. praise him for this. finally - give him a treat. as his nose touches your hand, praise him again. slowly raise your hand until he's 'giving' at the poll in picture perfect form. praise him some more. finally - make him 'hold' the position for a few seconds at a time, slowly increasing the time before he gets the treat & more praise one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen was Sheila Varian doing halter with one of her stallions. you couldn't even see her cues - he just moved in front of her, stood up tall and started snorting & arching - you could tell there was an incredible bond between the pair of them [that's the only horse i've ever seen sheila show in a halter class - usually it's one of her handlers/trainers]
- whe nmine gets all wound up after a good romp he will park and pose without command.
