Where can I find free good horse training videos? I don't want to go buy videos if I can find some free so I want to try to look for some first. I got a new horse and I have someone helping me learn but I still want to look for information when I am not over at the stable. If you know of any sites that I can see free videos of proper horse care, riding, basic horse stuff, etc. That would be a big help!
Can you recommend any good horse training books/videos? I'm starting a job in a few months as the head riding instructor and trainer at a stable in my home town. Before you ask, I DO have a degree in equestrian studies, and I DO have experience working with and training horses as well as teaching riding lessons. However, I really have nothing to do between now and then. I need something to pass the time. SO, my question is this: Can you recommend any good horse training books and videos to read/watch to help pass the time? Or any interesting books/videos relating to horses and riding in general? Please be specific. Don't just say "_____ trainer does really good stuff, you should check them out!" Try to give the name of a particular book or video if you can. Also, I'm looking for something beyond what I expect are going to be typical responses to this (i.e. Parelli, John Lyons, etc... these aren't the only trainers in the world, you know!!!!!!) Hopefully I'll get some interesting and unique answers! More info: I do mostly western riding, and some dressage. The lessons I'll be teaching will mostly be beginner to intermediate western horsemanship lessons, possibly some advanced students depending on the clients I'm able to get, but I'd also like to broaden my horizons in my dressage riding as well so I can at least teach some basic beginner to intermediate dressage as well. As for the horse training, it'll most likely be pretty basic stuff - starting horses under saddle, correcting behavioral issues like bucking, etc. And possibly teaching a few horses the basics of reining. I'm glad to see so many responses already, keep 'em coming, getting a lot of good info here!
Does anyone know of a good horse videos? Youtube or email it to me? If you email me I can upload on the site other wise I must do it as a link. I am starting a horse rescue. You can see what I have done with my website so far by going to http://www.WildFireRanchRESCUE.com In the Press Room page I have a link to the Humane Society's video re: Horse Slaughter. I would like to add nice videos of just horses of all breeds just being horses either wild or trained. Videos of why we need to help these amazing animals - why we LOVE them as we do. If you know of any more re: Humane issues and horses that need rescue send those too. Thanks! I don't mean movies, I have seen all the horse related movies. I want actual clips that I can link to off my website.
How can I learn more about horse training? I've read a lot and watched many videos and training in person, although I've never had much experience with actual training. So while I'm very knowledgeable I haven't put it into practice yet. Right now i definitely don't feel prepared to buy and train my own horse. Are there other ways I cant get hands-on? In a few years I hope to buy an OTTB and train it myself. To do that I need to be very experienced in training obviously. Tips?
How did Monte Foreman affect horse training? And also horse learning too. I know he did scientific studies and found the different gaits but my trainer said he learned a lot from him. And he wanted me to try and watch some video's online but I can't find any. Also I only found Monte Foreman's Horse-Training Science book but that was it. So how can I find more books and videos about Monte Foreman? And also any other videos and books great for beginners, but nothing childish, would be great. :D Thanks so much!
Does anyone know of good firefighter equine training videos/infromation? I am a volunteer firefighter for our town and we have a ton of horse barns in out responding district and surrounding districts. So I am putting together a fire drill on what to do if on of the barns are on fire and how we should respond to that call. I am trying to gather some videos to show before we go to one of the barns and actually run it like a call. I am looking for any inofmration or links to information or videos. Anything will Help Thanks in advance..
Know any bad horse pictures, ads, videos, BYB websites, etc? I ask a question earlier about pictures for my website http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjGmcuSEVYGI7CNouxj8z.bsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100810130247AADZghe I decided to post ads, videos, and websites too. So if you've seen any bad horse ads, bad riding/training videos, or BYB websites, or fugly horses on the web please post them here. It would be a great help! Thanks! I wanted to make something like the fugly blog, but a website, not a blog. And much neater, and more easy to navigate. I just need lots of content to start.
Horse training movies?? Horseflix? Hello, I would like to find and horse library or video store. I accidentally found horseflix, but they are not accepting new customers, so does any one know of another site like netflicks but for horse videos? When I go to register for horse flix it says We are not accepting new customers at this time as we upgrade our systems. Thank-you for your patience.
At what age can a horse.....(training question)? Again with a foal... I'm planning on using a Clinton Anderson methods, working with foals, weanlings and yearlings, after that though, what age could I start moving on with his other videos? like at 1 1/2 or 2? I'm probably going to be getting a yearling soon, and he hasn't had a whole lot of training, but he's pretty gentle.. I was just curious at about what age could I start moving on with his training?
Trick training videos? Would any of you like to learn tricks for your horse? Do you think it would be a good idea to do a YouTube series of trick training videos that show you how to teach a certian trick? I have a miniature horse who knows tricks and I also have a pony who knows nothing so would you rather see how the trick is done or would you rather see a horse learning it? It would be easier to jus show my mini doing the tricks while telling you how to do it because my pony will be up for sale soon and I don't really want to teach him advanced tricks and then sell him without perfecting the trick. Also, what tricks would you be interested in learning? I'll do my best to teach my mini anything he doesn't already know. The only thing I WILL NOT teach is the rear. Why? Because it should only be attempted by certian people and certain horses. My YouTube is lelloandfwoop of you want to subscribe ;) @meimester youare correct that most if not all tricks can become a bad behavior but if trained properly they should never turn into bad or dangerous habits. It's a simple thing to not reward your horse for a bad behavior and they soon figure out that they won't get a reward for something you don't want them to do @meimester youare correct that most if not all tricks can become a bad behavior but if trained properly they should never turn into bad or dangerous habits. Has anyone used the Stacey Westfall training videos? I was thinking of buying them, I'm always looking to improve my training skills. I was just wondering what people thought of them and if they are worth buying. I was going to buy all 5 videos, including the brideless riding, basic body control, basic ground work, starting young horses, and teaching your horse to bow. I was wondering if she goes into teaching things like rollback, spins, and sliding stops, or if she only covers the very basics. Also, what you thought of the videos and if they helped you. It would be great to hear people's opinions. I should clarify that i have been riding all my life, and I already train. i'm just looking to expand my knowledge. Since I grew up around horses, I do know quite a bit about them so please don't treat me like an idiot. I do know exactly what i'm talking about. I only know how to teach the basics which is why i'm looking to expand my knowledge.
How do you think my horse's training is coming along? He used to be a Western roping horse. And now I'm trying to teach him how to jump. How do you think it is going? Thank you for your opinions! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLl3yaciIQg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI-oIc-3JHI Sorry that the videos are a little blurry... I don't have that very good of a camera =/
Dressage horse training? i would like to get my horse into dressarge but dont know much about it such as movements, rules so on so forth. can you please give me important infomation and movements i will have to teach my horse before competing, i am serious about this. any good websights, videos ect. and if anyone could explain how to teach these movements to my horse in a way that is not confusing for her, even if it takes forever to teach i realy don't care.
Is it bad for a horse to jump with a western saddle ? My Appendix Quarter Horse was trained for jumping before I got him, over the past 2 months I 've been reading and watching a lot of instructional videos on jumping horses. Last weekend I set up a two foot high single rail and I tried jumping (after a lunging exercises over small obstacle). My horse cleared it with no problem (I was told he jumped around 3-4 feet high) and I got to admit I have a hole new respect for the sport, it was the greatest feeling I have ever experienced on a horse. If I continue with this I do plan on getting the proper saddle. I just want to know if I use my western saddle for a while will I hurt is back
Barrel Racing Help training my horse? I am training my gelding for barrel racing and i was wondering when we canter through it do i have to worry about the right leads. I am asking cause when i took him to a jackpot he was galloping through and he did great and i think he was on the wrong leads the whole time. But when a horse i galloping are they even on leads? How 2 teach ur horse 2 collect from the ground ? I've been Training my horse to collect and he is doing a great job when I'm riding him. Now, I want to try to teach him to doa piaffe from the ground. I know how this works, but I'll need to collect him for that. How do I do that ? Any websites or videos would be great. Thank you ! Well I have been doing a piaffe and passage with him. (riding him) He is doing a wonderful job on that ! I've done some research and found out how I can do the whole thing from the ground, so anyways thanks for your good answers :)
HORSE TRAINERS: Do you make an OK living on training? I was wondering how much per year do you horse trainers out there make, what state you train in and what types of horses you train. I know people that must be making a fortune training and some people that have flat-out given up since they get no income. (PERSONALLY, I don't think they're trying hard enough, but they've got a kid and a household to take care of, so I don't blame them.) I'm asking this question, because I am going to go to college for a horse training program. (I know I don't NEED to, but this college will teach me LOTS of stuff an apprenticeship won't.) I plan on starting out by training solid trail horses and possibly buying unwanted horses and re-training them to sell after they are finished. I will also probably try to get certified as a horse judge and judge for 4H and open shows (nothing fancy) to supplement income. I'm going to try to get an apprenticeship with either a cow, reining or barrel racing trainer. I'll probably do barrels. Then, if I'm good enough, I want to start a video series called "Full Potential Horsemanship."
help with training my horse??? *re-post*? My horse Buzz is a 6 year old thoroughbred gelding. I've been getting back into working him, since he was off for a while. (he had strangles :'( not fun). I also just got him this summer so I haven't really had a good long ride on him yet since he's been off. I'm still trying to figure out all of his quirks and stuff! I'm still getting used to the fact that his stride is so much longer then horses i used to ride, so it feels like he's going fast when really he's not! I'm also a bit of nervous person, so sometimes he can feel it. (My recent fall didn't help my confidence either. I'm always worried he'll bolt again) I'm worried that my nerves will make me never be able to ride him confidently. I am REALLY confident with groundwork and lunging, it's just when I get on I tense up. Does anyone have any tips on confident riding and controlling faster horses? Any websites or videos would be greatly appreciated! Also, since he's only 6, will he grow out of some of his quirks? He also has such a great personality and when I rode him before i bought him, he was AMAZING! He was very respectful and didn't rush or misbehave. I want to ride like that again, it's just my nerves are getting in the way. I'm just the type of person who has a hard time letting things go. (like when i fell) And i don't want anybody saying that i should get a different horse because I am committed to this horse and just couldn't let him go. *I'm sorry it's soooo long* For certain people who think otherwise, I have taken many many years of riding lessons!
Which Horse Should I Look At To Lease? [[ Videos Included ! ]] ? Ok, so I''ve been riding most of my life. I've trained horses before including my OTTB. [[ off track thoroughbred ]] I mainly compete in Jumpers, Dressage, Combined Training, Eventing, and I may start hunters. I currently own one OTTB and I've also been looking for a horse to lease, and I have two favorites. I know the barns that their both kept at but I need some help before I go look at them... The first horse is Diesel. He's a 4 year old 17.2hh Percheron X Standardbred gelding. I'm in love with his gaits but do you think he could be an ok jumper? [[ I'd wait until he was a little older to start that ]] I've seen the heaver breeds such as Friesians, Draft Corsses, etc being amazing jumpers! I would also be doing dressage...which I'm sure he would be great at! Though is it just me or does he seam to have a little bit of a long back? How is the rest of his conformation? Other thoughts? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtRl3y2nULA The second horse is Shyanne. She's an 8 year old 16.3hh Draft Cross [[ Paint X Belgian ]] How is her movement to you? Any obvious conformation faults that I'm missing? Does she have the build to possibly be a jumper, eventer, etc? Any other thoughts? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPEvDOmKJfI Yes the first horse is broke :] I would love to train horses for people as I am capable of it. The only problem is that I'm 13! It's also hard to find people who want me to train their horses as most barns here are western. Though I may start working at a local barn; hopefully helping to train some horses. :D
How to train a horse to maintain speed without being on his mouth the whole time? Tips, cues, videos, anything will help. My horse doesn't maintain his speed very well. Sometimes he's awesome, others he's all over the place. He's great when I ride him in the round pen, but out in the arena, this is when he acts like a retard. I ride western btw. Oh yeah, he likes to speed up. That would be a good point to mention haha.
Websites good for learning how to jump your horse? I want to train my horse to jump. He's young so its not like a"old dog learn new tricks" sort of thing. When I try to lunge him over it, he just abruptly stops and runs around it. I have a few times where he will go over it. But can someone give me some websites where I can read more about it or videos would be better. Thanks. Oh and I'll buy a book if it helped you. Thanks.
Is there any horse video games for teens? I really want to get a horse! Right now I am taking lessons and helping out at a local stable. I am going to lease a horse before I buy one just to make sure it is really what I want to do. I am going to take lessons for 8 more months but until then I would love to have even a virtual horse. I would love a horse game for any game system where you raise a foal and train the foal then compete in Show Jumping, Eventing, and Dressage!
HORSE CRITIQUE VIDEOS (WP 3 YR OLD)? I PROMISE this is the LAST time I'm posting this question :) Please critique this horse for me. He is a possible buying prospect. He is 3 years old, almost 16 h.h., and still in training. I hope to show him locally in western/english pleasure, horsemanship, showmanship and possibly hunt seat and trail. (taken this month) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWNTDM-PFS0 (next two are from a show in August) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVvTdRdM2Eo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNxoigEb99A
Parelli, John Lyons, or Richard Shrake ? I'm being offered some horse training videos, however, I do not want to buy them all: All of the Parelli training videos 6 (six) John Lyons training videos 2 (two) Richard Shrake training videos Which should I get ? I know Parelli's techniques, but I've heard bad things about him. I know John Lyons' techniques, but not well.. and I've never even heard of Richard Shrake. Opinions, experiences, advice ? Thanks so much ! I'm working on several different cases, all TWHs: Re-training a five-year old mare to ride western. She was previously a show horse and therefore is very, very skittish, shy, and spookish. My goal is to make her a trail horse. Teaching an eleven-month old colt better ground manners, leading, bathing, and cross-tying.
Parelli training method? hi everybody! i'm planning on training my colt parelli (i've researched it a ton and know somebody who can help along the way if i need it) and was just wondering if any of you have trained your horse parelli. if so, please share. did it work for you, was it easy or hard, how long did it take you, etc. also, if you have any videos of you training your horse parelli please do share. Oh and if you want, please include a picture of your horse too! thanks!
What should I buy (videos) to get started with Clinton Anderson? there are so many!? Ok, so I am wanting to start using Clinton Anderson horse training meathods, but I don't know where to start. I have a 6 year old gelding, and I want to have something to do with him in the time I spend with him, and of course to further his training.. He is pretty finished with ground work, but I'd like to start from the beginning. What should I buy first?? thanks!
What is the trick to training a horse to "jump"? Hi, well i have a 20 year old appy and i have been walking, trotting over crossrails (about 6-10 inches above ground). In the trot he will just step over individually and not "jump" no matter how fast his trot is. I have seen videos of other people trotting over small jumps and the horse will jump from the trot and canter on. How can i get my horse to "jump" instead of "step" over a jump? thanks everyone, dont worry i know he is older, but he acts like a 10 year old so i am taking that into consideration. Advice would be nice! thanks He has never done any jumping before, just dressage :D I dont EVER plan on competing in jumping with him, it would just be a good exercise to have him jump a few inches. if i raise it will he eventually "jump"? because i have done that before and he will try to step over it and he will trip. I am afraid he will get hurt. i have tried raising it, but he has in his head that he is going to "step"over it. He tries really hard for me and he can get hurt stepping over a high jump like that.
Horse blog topics, what would you want covered? I've started a blog to highlight some questions here on the Y!A horse section and to post interesting horse facts, treat recipes and training videos on. What kind of topics would interest you if you were to read this blog? what kinds of things would you want to see? How would you suggest getting more people to read it? would people like a highlight horse of the day? where i post someones personal horse, show name, breed, barn name age disapline. would people like a breed of the day? i post a few pictures of a new breed each day WOuld people like to see more videos or more pictures? the blog http://onceuponaponytail.blogspot.com/ should i change the layout, i want to keep it classy
what should training level dressage look like? so I know dressage is about developing the horse mentally and physically, but I have seen a lot of horses that are in "frames" in training level dressage. What would a good training level horse look like, and how does the judge identify that? videos and pictures are great! ;D I am training my mare as naturally as possible, without any martingales, side reins, etc.
Do you need a license to train horses? I do not train people. I only train horses. I wanted to start training horses in CT, but I didn't know if you have to have a special license or something. I have videos of my blind horse that I trained to gallop and climb and swim and do all sorts of stuff, despite the fact that he was blind. He passed away almost a year ago in a tragic accident, so I do not have him to physically show people. I have a 6 month old filly, so I cannot train her to show people what I know how to do. Let me say this though: I do not train in a specific style of riding. I know how to start horses, no matter what age or level of "green-ness." My stallion was 5 years old, and completely green when we got him. I can trick train, and I can help blind horses in particular. Any suggestions?? I just wanted to reply to the comment left by kthywheatley. As to who would want a blind horse, why dont you and your closed mind go and watch the videos that I have. heres how to get there. go to myspace.com and click on "videos". type "blind horse shug" in the search. the three videos that come up are of him. so until you have the chance to experience something, i suggest you shut your mouth. you have no idea how close shug and i were. you have no idea how much it hurt to lose him. he was only 7 years old. so until you can show some sensitivity when you talk, dont. oh, and by the way, my filly knows how to lead. she knows how to lead with no halter or lead rope. she stop snad walks on command. thats how i work. but she is only 6 months old, which means i cannot ride her, which was my point. thank you very much.
What do you think of this horse (videos)? This is the 6 year old TB I'm looking at as a project. She barely knows how to stop, back up, or turn, but she's an incredibly fast learner. She's the one with the short feet due to a bad farrier's job and neglect, and she was pretty sore that day and you can tell when she trots, even though OTT (she never raced but was trained) need work in the trot anyway. Does she look like she's lame or does it look like its just her sore front feet? When I first got on she was VERY tense but got better as I rode. How does she look conformation wise? And she WILL be vet checked twice and have a farrier waiting for her when she arrives. And she's only been sore for the past couple days and I saw her during Easter and she was great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj0jNJN3ubY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y3xi5lxt0k please turn the volume down i sound awful
How are we coming along? Pleasure horse (VIDEOS)? Here is my 5 y.o Appaloosa gelding. He is being trained in western pleasure, english pleasure, english jumping, and some gaming. He doesn't really like to get his lead to the left but hes coming along. How can I fix anything you see? How do I look? YOU WILL WANT TO TURN THE SOUND OFF. I AM YELLING AT MY BROTHER TO TURN IT OFF. LOL Once I get him to not buck out the canter when asking for the left lead. We are going to start using draw reins or a running martingle. Hes been riden since he was 3. Hes not new at this. I'm just doing some major touch ups
Clinton Anderson videos...? Okay so I do not want to go buy a video if I don't have to on Clinton Anderson horse training tips. I'm trying to just get a little bit of information on problem horses, such as lunging, so I was wandering if anyone knew any good sites or links that lead to a free video of clinton anderson training a horse in the lunging catagory. Thank you to whoever helps!!!!

Should I do Horsemanship with a green broke horse? I'm helping my trainer train a horse. Her horse is a 3 year old green broke paint gelding. I've ridden him once. He's been ridden twice. First time by 2 people. Second time he was ridden by 4 people. I've been watching some Horsemanship videos on youtube.com and I'm really interested in do that with Blue Eyes (thats his name.) I'd have to talk to my trainer, but I think she'd be ok with it. But my question is- should I continue riding him in the saddle training him that way, or should I see if I can start horsemanship with him? Blue Eyes hasn't offered to buck yet, but I've only gotton him to Walk and Trot. Due to, a small round pen. If my trainer would allow me to do this, how would I start? Thanks Im not showing the horse. I just want Blue Eyes to have fun and be relaxed and have no retraints on him. Like a bit.
Training a horse to jump more freely? I have a gelding who is quite new to jumping. I have trained him to go over jumps up to 80cm (2ft 6inch). I beleive that he jumps a little strange and sometimes awkward. How to teach him the correct technique over jumps. Any tips advice is appreciated. BTW there's pics and vids as well.... How can I ruin a perfectly good horse? OK - this is a rhetorical question, but I wanted a forum to post a few of horsemanship that people need to read from time to time. HOW TO RUIN A GOOD HORSE _Top 3 TIPS for NEW OWNERS! 1) Love him to death. Treat your horse as though he has no needs except to be there for you. Make sure that you spend every waking moment with him, groom him for hours on end, play games with him, keep him from his herdmates, worry about every muscle twitch and hair out of place. Never step back and wonder if the horse really likes this - of course he does! He is your best friend - your only friend. 2) Train him yourself. Good trainers are too expensive, and besides, you've read at least two training manuals and watched videos galore about how to train horses. 3) Bring him right home. You have a new barn and a pasture that is just begging for a horse to live in it. He will love all of the room and the peace and quiet. He has you for a companion, so he doesn't really need other horses in his herd. Plus, he knows how much you love him and he can forgive any mistakes that you might make in feeding and care - he understands that you have to start somewhere.
Tell me about your horse? I'm bored and love to hear all about people's horses so if you have any funny/ scary stories with your horse please do share or even if you just have an awesome horse or a horse that your training or a rescue horse or whatever then do share. Please and Thankyou. Oh! Also, if you have any pictures or videos of your horse that'd be awesome too. Thanks!

If I wanted to adopt and tame a wild mustang (someday), what books and videos...? What books and videos would you recommend I read, watch and study now in preparation for the eventual possibility? I know how to ride a horse but have never really trained any. Probably will never happen but when I get an idea, I like to read and learn everything about it, so if you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for all your answers. But keep in mind I have no immediate plans to do this, so I really do just want reading material and video suggestions.
What are examples of "refresher" exercises for a trail horse? I am looking for specific "how-to" videos or articles on exercises for refreshing a trail horse from the ground and in the saddle. I've tried Googling and looking on You-Tube, but nothing that is instructional. Horse is a 4 yr old grade gelding that was professionally trained, but has been ridden few and far between since. I am leasing him. NOTE: All exercises will be done with the permission of the owner. Hiring a trainer is not an option, so please don't suggest it and lessons aren't available.
When my horse does this what does it mean? I have heard from a trainer that when horse put their ears back when your working with them that means they are thinking about doing some thing mean,is this all the time every time that they do it or how do you know the difference? I was watching John Lyons Training videos, and he said that. When I am working with my horse she blows hard alot and keeps her ears back almost the whole time as well does this mean she is thinking about doing something mean and if so how do I stop her from doing it? Thanks From what every one said and the pics she is just agravated and annoyed because she was never made to work at her former owners place and now I am trying to get her to where I can ride her she has been ridden in the past but is has been a long time and she is in no pain I can garantee that cause as soon as I stop she is fine she is just a very moody mare Thanks to all. What do I do about her getting annoyed, any thing ??
Training to jump? When the summer is over im going to be buying some more hoses. I already have one horse, and will be tacking in two of my uncles. But i want to train one of the horses i buy from the horse auction to jump. I may show with him but im not sure yet. Is it hard to learn? I have been reading about training, watching videos, and i have the patients, and the time. Golf doesnt start till the end of school any way. So what are some things you did to teach your horse to jump, and your self. jumps about this high for right now. http://www.jackandpaulacurtis.com/images/012_12.JPG THANKS!
I'm wanting to do a join-up for the first time, but the horse is pushy and I don't want to get hurt? My mom's friend has two horses, both have been trained by her. One is an 11 y/o mare, who is saddle broken, but not very well trained. I've ridden her and she hardly responds to any of my aids and is a bit disrespectful. the other is a 4 y/o male, i'm not sure if he's gelded but i'm pretty sure he is. he's a little bit tall for me (i'm only 5') and he was abused when he was young. he's in a good home now, but he's not been trained at all except for being halter broke. he's sensitive around his barrel area, (he was beaten hard there when he was little; i think he had a few broken ribs for a while) and he's not shy to take a nip out of you for no reason. he's real pushy, and a little hard to handle. the owner said i would be welcome to learn about horse training with him, and i'd love to try and join up with him. i'm fascinated with Monty Roberts' join up technique, and i want to learn to do it myself, and these two are the only horses i can really try it on. i'm not afraid of the horses, i just don't really know what i'm doing and i don't want to do something wrong and get hurt. i'm not inexperienced with horses, i've been riding for years and have done a bit of lunging practice in the past, but this is totally new and i don't want to screw up. is this a very good idea for me? i've read monty roberts' books and watched his videos, so i pretty much know how to do it, i just wonder if i should wait for a calmer horse. the only thing is, i don't know when a calmer horse will come along. i'm leasing a school horse this summer, but i'm pretty much limited to riding on her. PLEASE i don't need rude comments, if you think it's a stupid idea for me to try it on this horse then please say it nicely!! thank you!! also if you have any tips on join up that would be great too. yes there is a round pen, but it doesn't look like it gets much use. the horses are healthy and everything, but they don't get much attention.
What age to start jumping a horse Hello and thank you to all of you who answered my previous question. But when is an ok age to start a young horse over fences? I thought it was: 3 1/2 to start riding (backing ect.) 4 for more serious riding (Walk, trot, canter, more work with those) And 5 for starting jumping. But my trainer said at age 3 they can start competively jumping and showing. I am about to buy a 4 year old gelding who is a TB and I want to make sure that I have a trainer to help me with some of his training and I don’t want my horse to be started to early. She said that his knees should be closed up, and that he can be jumping on the 3ft and up circuit by November with the right amount of discipline and training. Is this right? It sounds like a recipe for disaster. What is the correct age that I should start my horse over fences, so he would be damaged and have problems later on down the road? Here is a link to what the horse is like: http://www.archershorses.com/ty.html And his video: Click on “Tiger Jewel” http://www.archershorses.com/videos.html

Advice with training my youngster? I grew up riding and showing English, but always leasing someone else's horse. I got out of horses while I went to school and traveled, but now I'm back home and last spring I bought myself a yearling (my first horse!). It was my intention to send him away to have him trained. But recently I have been thinking that I want to do it myself. I have all the equipment for lungeing and ground driving, but it would be my first time training a horse. If it can be done, why can't I do it? So I have been collecting as much info as I can online, videos on youtube, library books...I am going to start him this spring. Does anyone have any advice for me (to add to my growing cache of training opinions)...any tips or tricks for ground driving or lungeing? Any links to your favorite trainer's sites....any particular book or DVD that you swear by? My horse has excellent basic ground manners, and he is as laid back as they come. He's small too...QH. I am fairly laid back as well, I have what you would call a "quiet hand", I don't use a chain over the nose on my horse (I hate that lungeing video on youtube where the girl keeps cracking the chain over her horse's face....not my kind of training), I don't yell at him...when he does something wrong, I basically make it harder for him to do that particular action than to do what I am asking...when he does what I am asking, I release. I have considered clicker training as well. Any opinions on clicker training? Haha sorry for the long question! Hope to get some insightful answers to help me out! Cheers Oh yeah, I forgot I wanted this question answered too....one trainer's opinion is to start ground driving with a halter. She says when they are wearing a bit, they are dealing with new changes in their balance and it's too much all at once. I was thinking that is good advice. What do you think? Thanks for the comments so far...I just wanted toadd in that I am not planning to back him until he is 3 years old. He is maturing very well...I was just hoping to do some light ground driving and VERY light lungeing over the summer.
Tips for starting a horse barrel racing. Video link.? I am training my horse from scratch how to do barrels. We have trained for a few weeks at it & she has caught on very well. Here is a video my boyfriend made me of us cantering barrels for the second time. Any tips? Please no rude comments, it is only our second time cantering & I am very proud of her. She does get a little excited coming off the second barrel though. http://youtube.com/watch?v=JZZOMzXUf-8 I have & do walk & trott her through the pattern several times. She pretty much has that down perfectly. We walk it & trot it about 10 times near perfectly before I canter her through them. We have not yet run them. I will not until she is comfortable & really good doing it at a slow canter. I got er about a month and a half ago, before then she did not even know her leads not mentioning ever near barrels in her life. She's pretty smart!
How do I train a horse to do tricks? I don't know if you can explain how to teach my horse all of the tricks in this video and if you can't thats fine but can you at least give me the names of all the tricks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCAS_KW28Ng
Would a training video , like this be of interest? I am working on a training video of a symposium i went to last year. it was with the world champion, multi gold dressage rider, heikke kemmer. (we shot with high def cameras, the clinician was miked up for clear audio) and have taken 16 hours of instruction (2 days 8 horses) and condensed it into 2, 1 hour dvd's. it is really more of a documentation of the training that took place those two days. it is not a "how to" type video but it shows the clinician evaltuating 8 horses of verying levels of dressage training (from just started 3 year olds to a 9 year grand prix mare), and after her quick assesment the viewer sees the rider work through some issues and learn how to move toward the next step. i thought it was a fascinating event, and the horses and riders were really the creame of the crop. i just want to get some feed back from ya users and see what you think? it will be priced at $55.00 for the set. Hi, the event was at Paxton Farm in Ohio, where they also had the stallions in training for the 100 day test. The 14 hour trip, after 2 non stop days at Iron Springs Kuering, was well worth it:) It is funny how I can offer the same thing to 2 different facilities and get 2 entirely different repsonses...LOL. I did contact the farm in Md. The registry had me go to Ohio. I always learn something new at the differnt clinics and shows I attend:)
Things to work on with my Western Pleasure horse (video)? This is my horse, Wrangler. He's an Appendix gelding, 13 years old. He's been in Western Pleasure training for a little over a year. It's all really natural for him, even though he's bred to race. When I got him I tried to train him for barrel racing, but it didn't work. (; Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwz7QYYrVRA Bloodlines: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/wranglers+waltz *That was his very first time in that bit. He's been ridden in a snaffle for over 3 years, and I got him this bit (8" shanks, snaffle mouthpeice) for shows. I am taking lessons with my trainer (who owned this horse before I did) and he's coming along nicely - he's already improved since this video. But I'd like other opinions. (: So don't so much critique my riding, this horse has a bad, phsyco past (rearing over backwards and bad bucking problem) so I was a little nervous about the new bit and concentrating solely on him. (: But tell me what he needs improvement on, and some things I can do to make that happen. Thanks in advance. (: warrenjudew - Thanks for the advice. His head is very consistent in a snaffle bit - but with the new show bit and only using one hand he's not quite sure what to do. I won't use a training fork or draw reins or anything like that on him because he's already very heavy on the forehand. SilverSlider - Thanks for all the advice! I'll take it all into consideration. A lot of what you said we've been working on with my trainer. So I know we're on the right track! (; And again, he wasn't sure about the bit and was carrying himself a little differently then he normally does. But thanks again! It helped a lot. (:
Possible New Horse (Video) A few questions? So I have been looking for a horse since August, and their is nothing out their in the market right now for me. My coach was free leasing a horse named Tailor Made. She can't afforded him anymore so he is leaving in November. His owners have afford him to my barn (we have been leasing him out from her for 3 years for 4 different clients, so my coaches no basically everything about him) at a Special price of 7,000. He is worth around the high 10,000 price range. So shes coming down a lot for us. I rode him about 3 times and already we have been improving. My coach says that their isn't a better horse for me out there than him. Tailor Made is a 17.2 hand Trakhenier 1995 bay gelding. He has a very nice passport. He has competed in the A's, and Trillium in both hunter, jumper, and equitation. He doesn't have the nicest tuck, which is why he is more of an equitation horse, but because he is a nice mover hes done well in hunters. Not very brave, but has competed up to 3'3 Trillium jumpers and did very well because he has such an open stride. Would make a fantastic equitation horse, which is what my coach says I need. She said if I work hard enough on my equitation, that next year it could be my class. Hunters are kind of boring and I would only go in it for training purposes. Jumpers I don't really have that "I wanna go fast" thought process, and I only would go in it to fool around. I would be competeting in 3'-3'6 equitation/medal classes in the A's and Trillium And in the jumpers max height would be 3'3 at Trillium level. He doesn't really try to jump untill you start jumping 4', hes gots some scope to move up onto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeiZp0CvoUQ Theirs the video. Jumps are low because it was my first and second time riding him. So here are my questions... 1. What do you think of him 2. How do we look as a pair 3. With all of the information I gave you and after watching the video, would you lower his price down a thousand. Rember you are rich and don't need money and you want him to go to the best hom possible. Oh and please dont critique my riding, its pretty horid. I only rode him twice in that video and we have improved greatley in our 3rd ride. Thanks I am really looking forward to your feed back before I make my final decision on him (: Sorry for the novel :p
should I buy this horse (Video Link)? I have been looking at horses to buy for a good month, month and a half. I have seen about 10, the good, the bad, and the ugly! I have visited and ridden this horse twice and I think she might be the one. I would be riding her mostly western, maybe taking some english lessons... really, she has the potential for anything. I'm probably not going to show her, just ride for fun. Here is a link to her video on the farms website. http://www.oxbowhorsefarms.com/horse%20for%20sale.html She is a 14 year old paint mare (it says QH, but the lady says she's a paint), 15.3HH, ridden western and english, and she used to be a 4-H horse. She has been ridden as a lesson horse 3-4 times a week for the past few years, the woman who owns her is only selling her because she can be stubborn. She is never aggressive, she listens well, but she can be hard to cue for kids and inexperienced riders. She is approachable, she stands well and doesn't budge until you tell her to, she saddles and takes the bridle well... she really is a sweetheart. She is very well trained, she neck reins and responds to leg cues with ease. She is just out of shape as far as doing anything more than carrying a kid around on a lunge line. What do you think of her? I'd love to work with her and reshape her into my perfect horse. She rides well for me, she listens, and she doesn't try to mess with me too much. I'm sure when she is in shape, she will be fantastic. It's funny you say that, Ron. The first rider doesn't ride western, she rides english! How funny. They are asking $900
Horse Jumping Critique?.....(Video)? Hi, I am training my horse to jump so the jumps are set low on this one. How is my form and my horses form? Any advice? Please don't yell about me not wearing my helmet, I find it a personal decision if you are on private land. But I respect your opinions. : ) http://www.onetruemedia.com/shared?p=89f2f4bed23d40b0afe758&skin_id=701&utm_source=otm&utm_medium=text_url Thanks everyone for the encouragement and advice. One note on his headset, he is a paso fino and the breed naturally carries their heads higher. My hands are not making him do that, but I was keeping slightly more rein contact incase he tried charging the next jump. He is 14.3 hands, but pasos tend to have short canons. What is a max height a horse can jump with that kind of body. I am new to jumping so I'm trying to learn as much as possbile asap. Thanks again : )
Which horse do you like better? Video and pics!!!? Alright so I am wondering which horse you like better! Tell me what you like about them, Mane N Tail, Confirmation, Color, etc... Thanks! I just want to know what you think about them! They are both pleasure horses that with the right training would dominate at shows! What do you think of Stacy Westfall's videos? Has anyone ever bought a Stacy Westfall video, and if so how did it help you and your horse? I saw her in person a few years ago jumping 4' bareback and bridless, and I really want to train my horse to go bridleless. The video I want to buy is called "woah" but it's $50 so I don't want to take a chance if it's not going to work for me. I have an OTTB who I currently ride in a Dr. Cook's bitless bridle. She is difficult to stop but slows down easily. She responds much better to my seat than to my reins so I usually stop her 90% with my seat & voice and 10% with my reins. I want to get her to the point where I can control her 100% using just my seat and voice. One thing though, I really don't believe in Parelli-type natural horsemanship. I am fine with doing groundwork but I don't believe in playing games with my horse. Is Stacy Westfall like this? I don't want to ride without tack just to do it, I really just want to be able to halt and stop my horse consistently without yanking her face off. She's very sensitive and doesn't like any pressure on her face or mouth at all. I've tried tons of bits and she won't have any of them, she goes OK in a bitless bridle but if I put too much pressure on it she tosses her head, just like she does with a bit. So, my main goal with "riding bridleless" is to be able to communicate with my horse using only my seat, since she absolutely hates any pressure on her mouth and face.
Would it be smart to buy this horse? Hi everyone! I am currently leasing a 20 year old Appaloosa. I am wondering when my lease expires in 2 months, if i should buy him. The owner is going to sell him for 2500 dollars. He has a lot of dressage experience, and is a very well trained sweet horse. Here is a recent video of us at a lesson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqdr6_zTcj0 what do you think? does he sound like a good buy even at his age? Yes it would be my first horse! I wouldnt buy him till my lease expires which would be in a few more months, so i do know how to take care of him.
horse that doesn't know how to lunge... need help please!? Well i was just doing my first session with my new horse. He is trained, saw him being ridden in the auction ring (thats where i bought him) Well during this sessioin he would trot on the lunge, only trot. And every time i clicked once and said walk, he would come into the center. he was trained to come in at a click. so I managed to get him to walk on the lunge a couple of times and so i let it stop at that. End on a good note! (yes i have experience, but not training horses) So how to i train him to walk on the lunge unless i ask him otherwise, without artificial restraints, and how do i train him to not come into the center. I have to go to him he cant come to me. thanks, if you need more info then ask. (no video avail. sorry)
Haute Ecole? I'm seventeen and i break and train horses with bits. sadly. today i ran across Haute Ecole and saw videos of horses trained without a bit or any force at all. im extremely fascinated and would rather train a horse that way then they way i do now. Can somebody tell me how i change this? Are there videos to help me train my horse this way? Do i have to have an Andalusian to train a horse this way. or can it be any breed? if you dont know what haute ecole is, please do not reply to my question. i know how to train a horse ive broken them, i want to learn to train like they do at haute ecole if you dont know what haute ecole is, please do not reply to my question. i know how to train a horse ive broken them, i want to learn to train like they do at haute ecole
Can a hunter horse be used in eventing? I've just started jumping and recently bought a horse. He is trained as a hunter and has done some dressage, but the barn I board at is primarily eventers. I think I will enjoy the eventing world more, but now I'm worried that my horse isn't appropriate for it. Here is a link to a video of us jumping (I'm still learning!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9d_HZwTgL8
What do you think of my horse? I just put this video together of me and my horse. he's a 6 year old morgan gelding and when i bought him last year (he was 5), he was extremely green broke and only used for trail riding. we still have a long way to go but i was wondering what you think of him. please feel free to critique my riding! I'm open to any constructive comments. also, how are we doing with barrel racing? i know the first turn on the second run in the video isn't that great. i noticed that my horse does worse on the left turns and i'm working on fixing that. i just started training him for barrels a few months ago and we're slowly starting to pick up speed. oh yeah..and i've never been on a trained barrel horse before either! lol. and i would appreciate and suggestions on how to make my two point better. so what do you think? what do we need to work on? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k_O563Dzyk&feature=channel_page Thanks! we're still learning so i know we're not fast yet. i'm trying to get his turns better before i ask him to go faster. like i said before, we're still working on picking up speed. what do you mean work on the trot? what's wrong with it? and thanks for the anwers!!
Pakistan Horse Dance? My daughter has viewed a couple of video clips of people in other countries who have trained their horses to "dance". She knows something of training, and there are various comments on the clips, regarding whether the training includes any harsh or cruel techniques. The horses are not visibly uncomfortable or unwilling, nor do they appear distressed. The handlers do not appear to use any harsh methods while the acutal "dance" is performed. Does anyone know anything of the background of this particular type of exhibition. It is often used for a display at weddings in these countires. Please don't comment with guessing or hearsay. What do you actually know? Not dressage - Pakistan Horse Dance. Quicker movements; in Pakistan, smaller horses; no rider - look it up - no guessing.
What should i spend my hundred pounds on? my dads gave me a hundred pounds and ive already saved up loads in my bank. im 12 years old and i like music, video games, horse riding, reading, art and animals i have a ds, gamecube and playstation so do you know any good games for them? btw i dont like movie tie-ins, kiddy ones, old people ones (brain training-please no flames-) or shoot em ups racing or fighting. i like zelda though. do they sell prisma colour in wales? dunno x3 please any suggestions?
Hmmm...so can we not post links anymore? My answer in horse section was deleted!? I wrote a lengthy and informative answer to cnsdubie's question regarding who was your mentor in learning to ride/train horses. I wrote about a professional trainer I grew up next to, and learned about horses from. I included a link to where you can purchase his videos. Checked back an hour later, and there are tons of other answers who name the person (I wondered if naming an individual might be a security violation, but apparently not) and my answer was gone. Furthermore, there is no button viewable for me to answer the question again, so evidently it was because of my link. Can anyone tell me why my answer was in violation? I always post answers with links in them, as they help point people to the answers they're looking for. I can't think of any other reason why! Anyone else have this experience? I've been away from my computer for about a week, and I read a few other's comments on their answers being deleted or their whole account being deleted. Why??? Hmmm....maybe it's just because someone wants my orange button? That's too bad Biscuit lost hers. What's with the gal that's only been a member for a month and has an orange button in horses? How is that fair? I think quite a lot of people are becoming disenchanted with Y!A all of a sudden. If anyone finds a better forum to move to, let me know! I like the points thing, but it's no fun if it doesn't work right. I'd rather just hang out and chat with all the other regulars here in the horse section, so let me know if everybody's moving somewhere else! Edit to Rachel: Yes, but I post answers with links to horse supplies for sale all the time. Like my answer for the question "Saddle Knot" where the person didn't know how to fix his cinch....I put links to countrysupply.com showing them what the off-billet and cinch of a western saddle look like and how they can order one, because it seems their new saddle came with just a latigo tie-strap and they don't know how to fasten the saddle....that sort of answer just needs links so you can show them with pictures, as I did. And that answer wasn't deleted, and it had probably ten different links listed! So I agree with you others who say it has to be jealous little trolls reporting me. Now if I could just figure out who they are. Mulereiner, did I hear mention of a list? Mind sharing? I accept emails!!! :) Thanks everyone for great answers and advice!
Want more answers- what do you think of this horse (video)? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj0jNJN3ubY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y3xi5lxt0k She's a six year old Thoroughbred (not raced but was trained) that I'm purchasing on Saturday. This was our first ride. Her feet are really short, and you can tell that theyre sore. Does she look lame to anyone? She definitely is green and I'd be purchasing her as a project. She's getting a vet check with her owner before I buy her (the only vet I'd ever use won't be able to see her until next week) and if that vet says shes fine then I'll have mine double check. And I'll have the owners sign a contract saying they'll take her back for full refund if she's lame. And I did the one tight circle to try to bring her head in. So yes, very very long way to go haha.
How do you think my horse is doing on barrels? I'm just starting my 6 year old morgan gelding on barrels. this is the first time i've ever trained a horse to barrel race and i was just wondering if you could give me some pointers. also, how do you think my horse is doing? does he seem like he will succeed in barrel racing with more training? i know his turns are pretty wide right now but he's just starting. won't they get tighter with more practice? I walk, trot, and canter him around them but i haven't tried running them yet because he bucks whenever i get him to go faster than a canter. does anyone know how to fix that? it's not a tack issue and he's not in pain..he just gets excited. here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoBOEhbbERo&feature=channel_page Thanks!! i was trotting around the actualy barrel but loping the rest of it because if i lope him around the barrels, he takes wide turns.
What do you think of this horse? Here is his ad text: "Bandcat" Adorable and Super athletic 4 y.o. T.B. gelding who was born in April. Never Raced 16.1 hh and may grow to 16.2. Green broke 90 days pro training. Very brave, loving, not spooky, shoes, cross ties, loads. With the right training, this horse will be top competitor due to his fluid, lofty, movement, good mind and athleticism. Great form over fences (free jumped only). I would be buying him to be a future jumper/eventer. What do you guys think about his conformation? Do you like his gates? Is his price reasonable? Is there anything you like or dislike about him? In your opinion would he make a nice jumper/eventer prospect? Also what age should I think about starting him over fences (if I get him)? Here's his video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vS2-4QD8FI&feature=channel He is $4,900 I will go look at him, I just wanted to see what you guys thought before I drive 9 hours to go see him Lol
i need answers cause i am trying to train my horse? my horse is an 8 year old quarter horse cross http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/freklbeck22/downsized_0618081110.jpg i am planning to ride him today and will post a video but people say he looks best in english tack so i would like to start working with him in english i have an english saddle, stirrups, stirrup leathers, and an english girth its an all purpose english saddle i use a slow twist full cheek snaffle on him but he doesnt really listen very well to it so what bit should i get to make him listen a better (the problem i have with him is stopping. he stops pretty well in the arena but when were on the trail going home i have a big problem with me trying to stop him. if i attempt to stop him then he rears and bucks) so my questions are: 1. what do else do i need to train my horse to go english? 2. how do i make my horse stop rearing on the trail? 3. what kind of bit should i get? thanks (sorry it was so long) best answer chosen soon
When should I begin my Mini's driving training? My miniature horse will be a year old May 2nd and I was wondering since I planned on teaching him to drive, when is the best time to begin his training and how should I start, what should I teach in order. I pretty much also need any Driving information that you can possibly give. Thank you. DANClNG HORSE???????? How do these people train these horses to dance? It looks so awesome look at these videos... http://youtube.com/watch?v=FrSK581KFRs http://youtube.com/watch?v=aIt82GrD06k&feature=related Look at the whole video. The first one is a MUST SEE especially the end. How do they train them? Both of them are concerts.
Critique My Position!!! Videos!!!? Okaii,, I would like a critique on my position, and how my position has improved. Video 1: This is from July of 2008, the first time I rode my new horse Dot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM12lNn26kI&feature=channel_page Video 2: A little farther along in the training of this mare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYFUm79hUso&feature=channel_page Video 3: Same day as video 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDOIqO8NEOY&feature=channel_page Video 4: Same day as videos 2 and 3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDOIqO8NEOY&feature=channel_page Video 5: Even father in our training. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUSK7EHN_kc&feature=channel_page Video 6: Same day as video 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ADaCgeAFUk&feature=channel_page Video 7: Riding my mom's horse for her before a trail ride, making sure he is safe. Taken in November. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vLCexscPSg&feature=channel_page Video 8: Short, riding Ozzie at his old owners house. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJhiZ4tmisg&feature=channel_page Video 9: Me riding Ozzie at home for the first time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19JXgmN2TVs&feature=channel_page Video 10: Me riding Ozzie about 5 days ago. Crappy position coz I am bareback and my boots were huge and falling off so I was trying to keep them on :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLgRN_g6csw&feature=channel Alright now the explanation: Dot: 12 year old, 15.2hh, purebred qh w/Doc Bar on papers. I bought her as a project horse. When I first bought her, she was a fat, spoiled rotten horse who would refuse jumps and toss her head. And if you DID manage to get her over the jump, she would knock it on purpose :S She also pulled and reared when tied. In the first video, she was on good behaviour surprisingly. In the following videos it shows us as we progress through her training. I had her head tossing practically cured by the last video, by using a bitless bridle. I cured her of her pulling and rearing when being tied. And no, lol, I will not tell you how! A good magician never reveals their tricks right? And after I was finished with her, she never again refused a jump. Sorry about my crappy position in the english saddle on her. It was the only saddle that I had that fit her fat bum, and it was so poorly built that it totally crushed my eq. I sold her for $6000 as a finished jumper this December. Sorry I have no more videos of when she jumps higher and is less fat :( Ozzie: I bought him about 2 weeks ago, he is 4 years old, 14.3hh, and a pintabian. (0.78 pinto, 99.22% arabian) He is pree much a perfect angel. I am going to be using him for pony club and some showing. He is literally the most responsive horse in the world. It doesnt matter what bit you ride him in he is the same. You ride him in a halter and you still have to use barely an ounze of pressure. He is sooo amazing! I taught him how to neck rein like a pro and it only took him 10 mins to figure it out! Be as harsh as you want. And to the person who first commented, you are really rude! just because I was in a western saddle doesnt mean that I wasnt trying to ride english style!
What's the name of this horse movie? I used to rent it from the video rental store (or my mom, rather) when I was younger.. It was set in England/Scotland/Ireland and its about this girl that finds a unicorn (idk, maybe it was a white horse) and she trains it or something like that and then she makes friends with a leprechaun.. or something.. and then she enters it into a jumping competition. It might have been called Lucky? idk.. I think the girl in the movie has brown/black hair and if I remember, I tihnk her name was Sarah.. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks! (:
I need a Gif of a horse carridge, maybe even a train, in Naruto--where do I get 'em at??? I'm making this haliarous video for youtube, and in the song for my vid, it talks about taking off in a car. Since there's no such thing as cars in the Naruto universe, I've decided to use the train that appeared in that one movie, or a horse carridge (if they've got one). And if I can't find that, then is there any other way for the ppl in Naruto to get around??? Temari using her fan is a good example (can't show a picture of Temari because she's not in my vid :p)
Looking for answers on 'Clicker Training'? I just watched a video of Leslie Pavlich training a filly using clicker training. It was truly amazing how far she got with the filly...but my question is this, what happens later, the horse is so used to the treats and clicks...obviously you can't do that forever. Is there a period where you phase out the treats and clicks? How does that work? Just looking to learn more about clicker training!
Can you answer my barrel racing question? I have never owned a horse but am now going to be getting one soon. I want to barrel race but even though this will be my first time owning a horse, I am very determined to train one on my own. I have barrel raced a little for fun but only a show lope at the most and I have been riding quite a bit for a few years enough to know what I'm doing. I have lots of knowledge of working up to barrel racing and going slow as well as making sure the horse is flexible etc. I would get the Clinton Anderson videos for barrel racing and know I would be able to follow them. What I want to know though is could a horse that competes in western pleasure be trained to barrel race? I found a beautiful paint horse that I want that I would also compete in western pleasure as it is trained to do but could I be able to train it in barrel racing if I wanted to?

A question for people that show about Parelli? I'm just curious to know what people that show and train seriously/professionally (I'm talking people that do hunter/jumpers, AQHA, and anyother type of breed competition or high level of showing) think of Parelli's methods. Has anyone trained their high level show horse using his methods? I'm just curious because it seems like everyone that recomends using Parelli isn't really into showing, and isn't too familiar/experianced in training, it seems like to me that a lot of people pick up a Parelli video, or go to a clinic, then start calling themself a trainer... Is anyone out there that is seriously into showing a huge supporter of Parelli? Or do you feel like it is over hyped? Wasn't intended to be a loaded question. I'm just curious because I don't know much about Parelli other than what I have heard from people at my barn who are are all pretty inexperianced with training, yet are all avid fans of his... I haven't heard anyone that is serious about training have an opinion on him.
I need a good horse!!-? I need a great horse for a 12 yr old intermediate english rider. Has to be very sound, fully trained, ready to jump anything, good with the vet, clipping, etc. The horse also has to swim or at least be calm on beaches. Basically has to be a sound horse who is good enough to be a lesson horse. (As she may have to board the horse at her lesson barn). Please leave a website address to the horse's page or video. Thank you in advance!! -MS M PS- Her riding includes trails, jumping, showing, cross country, english pleasure. I live in the USA and looking for a horse around $5,500
The "Wedding Dance" is much more rapid in the movements. It is not Dressage or Spanish Training, but slightly similar to the Lipizzaner horses. Horses are small, maybe 13 or 14 hands, and repeat steps with rapid, somewhat jerky motions. One person commented that metal plates are put in the legs, others commented on what they said were harsh training methods, but sounded like guessing, rather than knowledge. Whips are not used during demonstrations, but simple soft cotton ropes as guides. Look up the dance and see the videos. Who knows where there is information on how this training is performed (for our knowledge, only). The "Wedding Dance" is much more rapid in the movements. Need opinions on what u think of these horses? http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2039855400099768230awinXU http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2519118270099768230RckUGt The first is a 4 yr old gelding 16.3 AQHA green broke, suprisingly a pretty good loper even though I feel he is a little straight in the shoulder and his neck is a little short for his size and is a little for-hand heavy, I have seen a video of him being ridden and he has potential, looking to use in WP. The other is a Smart Chic Olena grandson, 5 yrs and has been trained for reining but he doesnt enjoy it and I think he would make an awesome WP show horse, has a killer lope. He is 15.3. The first is 9,000 and the 2nd is 12,500 both are in Arizonia and I havent had a chance to go see and ride them yet. Just wanting some feedback.
Is this really how dressage horses are trained??? i canme across this you tube video and it made me wonder...is this really how you train a dressage horse? I AM NOT knocking the girl in the video and not trying to say shes right or wrong...i just really want to know if this is the accepted way to build up dressage muscles or whatevrtr. it doesnt look right to me, but what do i know? ( i mean, the loooow side reins dont look right. horse looks unbalanced or uncomfortable and isnt that the opposite of the point of dressage?) here it is, take a look and tell me what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enRfa9-Uoao&feature=related thxxx!!! yikes, and i just noticed that she says the horse is only FOUR. :P
The Stallion I am breeding too....What do you think? He is a 5yo Dunskin stallion, and he is literally the ULTIMATE all-around horse. I really like him and I already am breeding my mare to him I just wanted to know what everyone else thought... i guess you could say im showing him off haha His ad video... http://youtube.com/watch?v=2_4QU8Fhx2s&feature=user Training video http://youtube.com/watch?v=BOTMKU9kkRo&feature=user I almost forgot... His reg. name is SBR Formula One and his barn name is Buckwheat or Buck haha you're funny, Just because most breeders breed just to breed and creat horses that just get passed from home to home unwanted doesnt mean every one does. I have major plans with this un-born foal. So just because you think breeding is bad, or shouldnt be done, Keep it to yourself, no one want to hear your self-righeous rants just so you can feel good about yourself. Yes I am keeping the foal. I am going to train it myself and it will become my all-around horse, I want it to be "just like his/her father", but I will most likely do either barrels or reined cow horse with the foal as its main job. Its hard to find such a willing horse that does all these things. Thanks I cant wait to see the foal in 2010.(im breeding 09 cause i plan on showing my mare all this year) Well I agree with you there, I also think slaughter should come back, but it needs to be better monitored by the USDA. I dont mean to get defensive, cause i know alot of times breeders who plan on keeping foals just sell them after weaning and I do think that is wrong. What do you mean "People Like me''? Breeders? This is the only time I plan on breeding and I would rather live in the streets than sell the foal I am getting. All I ask is that you dont criticize or judge me on what other people do with their horses. Southern_Belle yes it is going to be very hard to wait, but I am also excited about showing my mare more before I let her off for a few months during her gestation period. MS and Rachel- I agree with both of you. Bobbi- She is Palomino. I barrel race with her and do lots of Gymkhanas. Jules- If you were breeding to a stud like this wouldnt you want to show it off too? haha. Yes I like to talk color genetics too. these are my color percentages... 50% - Dunskin like daddy 25% - Zebra Dun 25% - Perlino Dun All of which I would welcome with open arms. Buck(stud) is Homozygous Black and Agouti and has one cream gene and the dun factor, so no red babies from him!!!
What do you think of this horse? Okay. So, what do you all think of this horse? He's 7 years old, an Appendix, roughly 16.2hh, and unfortunately a bit out of shape, seeing as he was left in pasture all last semester. He's located at the University of Findlay in Findlay, OH, and is ridden by my trainer (a student there) every day. The video was taken by my father, who hasn't videotaped in god knows how long, so I apologize now for its horrible quality. I've been riding for almost 9 years (I started at 6 and am now 15) and showing for about 7. I show my current horse in 2'6" Novice Hunters and usually make a pretty clean sweep of the ribbons (not to brag, but.. xD). I've jumped 3' on a green off the track thoroughbred, and I've helped my friend train a pony (which got sold for $7500). I'm currently helping her with another one which will hopefully go for around $4000. I'm going to trade my horse for this one. (con't in additional details) But basically, I want to know all of your opinions on this horse. I'm dead set on buying him if he passes the vet check, so nothing you can say can sway me from that decision. I just want critique and tips for him and me =) I'm posting the video here in a few minutes as soon as it uploads. actually, you can just find the video as soon as it's up on my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/xfiasco as well as a video of my current horse, Melvin. oh, btw. the horse this whole thing is about is named Biff =) omg! haha. Yeah, I pretty much ADORE Biff. And really, he wasn't "for sale" per say, actually more like I was looking for a horse and Raffi was like "Eh whatever go look at the horses and tell me who you like" cause we went to watch a IHSA show and I think he just wanted to get us off his back for a little while xD Anyway yeah my friend and I wandered around and saw Biff and pretty much fell in love. And we kept bothering Raffi about it so he was like "OKAY I'll talk to Sam" and yeah. It just went like that. I'm probably going to trade my current horse for Biff. =) heres the direct link to the video, for those who are lazy =) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTfrED7f3Vs I'm 15 years old and 5' tall, exactly. I'm gonna be small on pretty much every "horse." But don't forget Margie Goldstein =)

How much would you pay for an exercise rider..? I need a summer side job to keep me busy & to pay for some expenses. I just graduated H.S. and will be going off to college in late September. I've been riding for 7 yrs; have been a working student for 5 yrs and have ridden and shown English (flat and O/F to 2'6") and Western, Trail, and Halter/Showmanship. I've worked w/ horses from many different backgrounds- from breaking to problem horses. I know it's hard to evaluate a person's riding level through just the Internet with no pics or video, but I'd consider myself an Intermediate rider. I've won many ribbons at shows and usually place pretty high at county fairs and local shows... however, never ridden at an A show because I never had the money to. Just wondering, how much would you be willing to pay (if you are) for a rider on the same level like me to be grooming, riding/lunging/hand walking for 45 mins, and bathing your horses? I have my own tack & training supplies, can provide my own transportation and have health insurance
Endurance Training? I plan on entering an endurance race sometime in the future, when my horse is broke enough for it, and I would like to learn a bit about the training and exercises used in preperation for an endurance ride. Im also looking for exercises that I as the rider can do, to gain the endurance needed for the ride. So if you guys have any suggestions of books or videos, or any advice that you are willing to share it would be much appreaciated.
How much would you price this horse at? (pics&desc.)? Okay so everyones been doing this lately and im quite curios. a little history on how and where i got him: sale barn, 7 years old, appendix, 16.1, basics down, (walk trot canter jump) green, calm, honest. Now that ive had him 9 months : Quarter horse, 16.1, turning 8, slight arthritis in back hock, maintained easily by once a year steriod injections, After training by me, Has been show, has only gotten blue ribbons so far, Dressage training up to training level, schooling first level. can jump a course up to 2.3 record jump 2.9, cleared with ease. good knees and form. smooth hunter type canter, and suspension and lift in trot. no vices ( no cribbing or bite, kick rear ect) used in beginner rider lessons, taught kids to canter and jump. can be not ridden for a week and still be calm and ready to work. no buck no rear no crowhop no spook in him. ground ties, excellent ground manners. good for all vet, farrier and clipping. loads and unloads himself. Very flashy, calm and dead quiet, amazing on trails, walks through rivers, good on grass, ring or indoor. great around other horses. trail ride alone or in group. has western pleasure training, can jog and lope. i payed 9k for this horse, and with his basics minimal training, no papers, and arthritis i know i was ripped off, but id never take back my actions. im just curios if he is worth that much now, or maybe what he was worth compared to now? thank you for your time :) im really just curios also if people could tell me in a good horse market and in bad (like now haha) just curios, please no mean comments :) heres some pictures for reference : jumping---> http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2dtyo78&s=5 flat----> http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2lwrr7m&s=5 jumping----> http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=11w8y8h&s=5 flat---> http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=dwqvcl&s=5 flat----> http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=qy7l2x&s=5 Video of cantering bareback--->http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=16ghds4&s=5 Also i wanted to mention in his western training when you say whoa he stops dead. which came in handy one day we were cantering on the trail and a bunny jumped the trail and i said whoa and we just missed it :p oh no im definatly not selling this horse, he IS MY LIFE haha. but i was very curios cause daddy dearest loves to remind me how much he paid and how much ive had to work to get him as good as hes being (cause im so proud :) ) but im going to college in a year and if i cant bring him with me ill probably have to lease him now, so its good to know some monetary figures... yes it is really sad that he has arthritis, what really makes me angry is that we think since he has no conformation faults, well major ones, that is was probably due to being broke to early and worked to hard as a younster. see how bad it is? when people jump there 3 year olds? when they barrel race there 2 year olds? now my talented little guy is probably gona retire at 15, so sad. thats why i make sure i never jump more than once a week, and if that, also he is ridden 3 or 4 times a week, always getting his days off, always getting his steriod shots, adequin injections, suppliments, always making sure he never gets overweight, moving to a SPECIAL ring with soft footing, always polowrapping for flat and jumping days. its alot of maintenace, but as you can see hard work and results pay off....for now. :\ and i assume when the day comes i could always have him be a little girls "first pony" to learn to trot and canter on, do the teeny tiny cross rails, and pop a few schooling shows :D
